Entering into the season the TABC JV basketball was the heavy favorite to bring home the O’Brien trophy (or the Yeshiva league equivalent) in what would have been TABC’s first ever basketball championship.
Early in the season, the Storm lived up to the hype and jumped out to an impressive 7-0 start. However, mid-season the JV team hit an unexpected roadblock: Star forward Shmuli Coates was removed from the team for off-the-court issues. Hopes for the championship looked grim as Coates's hustle, tenacity, and defense were all a major part of the Storm’s success.
These doubts were furthered when the JV squad dropped back-to-back games against JEC and Frisch, respectively. The Storm just looked frazzled without Coates in the lineup.
Amidst all of the doubt, the JV team knew that in order to get back on track, everyone would have to step up. And step up they did as TABC won out the rest of their season and finished with an 8-2 record following a major victory over the Heschel Heat.
In the playoffs, the Storm looked reinvigorated as they easily dispatched Heschel and Shaarei Torah in the first two rounds. The Storm then faced the top seed of their conference in the semi-finals: the Frisch Cougars. The Cougars were clearly TABC’s toughest opponent thus far in the playoffs but without Max Zakheim, their star guard, the Storm pulled off a major upset and beat the Cougars at Frisch.
For the second straight year, the TABC junior varsity basketball team was headed to the championship.
In the finals, TABC would face a loaded Hafter team that was led by Matthew Jedwab, one of the league's best players. Early on, things didn’t look too good for the Storm as nothing clicked offensively and they found themselves in a deficit entering the second quarter.
However, the Storm bounced back and went on an improbable 21-2 run led by Yoni Mann, Liam Levy, and Yitzy Weiss. The JV squad managed to maintain the lead and for the first time in TABC history, a basketball team won the championship!
Yoni Mann took home MVP honors and said that “Winning was one of the best feelings ever…. It is definitely something that I will cherish for a long time.”
CONGRATULATIONS TO THE JV TEAM ON WINNING THE CHAMPIONSHIP!!
JV HOCKEY SEASON
The JV Hockey team cruised through the regular season with only one loss en route to another Championship. Led by freshman Daniel Levy the Storm beat Frisch in a thrilling championship game.
As Sophomore Jake Rothenberg put it, “Winning was one of the most exciting things of my life.”
