Is TABC Out to Lunch?: Why it’s Time to Offer a Lunch Plan at TABC

As I walked into Sammy’s on Queen Anne Road last week, I pondered what to order from the menu. After a great deal of back and forth discussion in my head, I ultimately settled on the traditional two regular slices of pizza. I withdrew my money from my wallet in order to purchase my lunch, and in a flash, my life changed forever.

The lovely lady attending the cash register at the pizza station stated the price, and immediately I realized that the prices in Sammy’s had risen once again. While this article is certainly not about the fluctuating prices at local eateries, the price changes and mere fact that sometimes the typical TABC student needs a new lunch option, have driven me to proposing and pursuing the idea of TABC offering a lunch plan for its students and faculty.

Now, some of you may be questioning how I could even offer such a proposal to a group of students privileged to have dozens of lunch options just minutes away. However, we all know that sometimes you are simply not in the mood to walk the 0.2 miles from TABC to the Queen Anne Road restaurants. Additionally, some students participate in intramurals or other clubs that meet during lunch. While we all have that friend who says he is willing to pick up a bagel for us, maybe it's easier to offer a lunch plan in TABC in order to make the lives of students, and our poor bagel fetching friends, a bit easier.

There are many logistics involved in establishing a TABC lunch plan -- one that could potentially involve the input of students and faculty. However, before you shoot down what you think is a proposal for fish sticks and sloppy joes, allow me to clarify what I believe is a viable option for TABC lunch. TABC underwent a major expansion on the building several years ago, and elected to exclude the addition of a kitchen in the building. Due to that decision, cooking lunch in the building is likely not an option. However, one realistic option includes catering from restaurants, similar to Chopstix Tuesday’s, which for no good reason disappeared several years ago. Additionally, the TABC lunch plan would likely only be two days a week, granting restaurants the opportunity to maintain students as customers. While this whole TABC lunch idea may seem unfathomable, it’s already in the process of development. Here’s a look at the process that is already underway.

When I asked one local restaurant waiter how he felt about TABC potentially starting a lunch plan for students, he said, “I’m not a fan of that at all. That better not happen.” Then I followed up my question with another. I said, “What if your restaurant was a caterer for TABC on a regular basis?” He said, “Sure, I dig that idea.”

After finding a potential option for catering, all we would need is the approval of TABC to make the lunch option a reality. I thought about who would truly influence this matter, and I came to the conclusion that Rabbi Miretzky, Director of Student Activities, was the right man for the job.

When I filled him in on the entire lunch situation, I asked him how he felt about it. He responded, “Ummm.”

After I thanked Rabbi Miretzky for his wise words, I stopped Mrs. Teri Normand, TABC’s Executive Director, to receive her input. Mrs. Normand agreed that a TABC lunch plan would be of great assistance to many students and faculty members. Additionally, she noted the potential for reduced prices for students due to the large amounts of food being purchased by TABC. With Rabbi Miretzky and Mrs. Normand on the case, I assure all of you that in the weeks to come, TABC may be offering a lunch plan. I look forward to hearing everyone’s input in order to accomodate all of the needs of students and faculty members.
