How to STORM like a Pro

How To STORM Like a Pro

By: Dovid Pearlman

Attention all students ESPECIALLY freshman!

High school can be tough sometimes, especially when it's a whole new experience for you. That's why I've decided to put together some school life hacks to help all of you out, whether educationally, financially, or socially.

  1. Magical Formatting:

If your essay paper is just a bit short of the length guidelines, do a find/replace for all your punctuation in 2 font sizes larger. The extra spacing may give you the few lines you need without changing the letter font size.

(How to do this:(please note this is how to do it on google docs- because seriously, don't use Microsoft Word. It makes sharing documents and sending documents on schoology and to teachers a lot harder)

Click Edit and then Find and replace. Next to "Find," type the word you want to find. If you want to replace the word, enter the new word next to "Replace with." To see the next time the word is used, click Next. To go back to the previous word, click Prev.

You can also search within a file using the keyboard shortcut Ctrl + f (⌘ + f on a Mac).)

2.Research Help:

If you have to write a long research paper, find one very solid source that pertains exactly to your thesis, use the bibliography from this source as the starting point. (Alternatively, you can use the bibliography of a Wikipedia article but be warned Wikipedia is not the most reliable source of information on the internet)

3. Have the Computer Read to You:

If you have to finish a lot of reading and the material is available online, download a text reading program and have it read the text back to you at 2-3x normal speed. This can improve comprehension and lessen the stress on eyes and brain associated with reading for a long duration.

4. Take your time and read:

This applies to number 3 as well. If you are more of an auditory learner, you should try number 3. Also, when you're taking a big test such as the SATS or ACTS, read the reading passages aloud(not too loud!) to yourself. Hearing yourself going over the passages can really help you retain the information when you are timed and have to quickly answer questions.

5. Fix Your Sleep Schedule:

If you have messed up your sleep schedule because of partying or studying, you can manipulate your circadian rhythm to get it back on track fast. Stop eating during the 12-16 hour period before you want to be awake. Once you start eating again, your internal clock will be reset as though it was the start a new day. You will be refreshed and ready to go!

The classic TABC locker trick:

This is already a well known life hack, but nonetheless an important one to state.

Some people have difficulty opening their lockers in TABC. If you are one of these many people, get your locker unlocked but don't let go of the lock after you pull it up. While it's still up, insert a plastic spoon in the hole created. Once you then let go of the lock, you're locked will now be unlocked, and a lot easier to open. Now you won't be late getting your books for class! You're welcome.

Can't wait to share with you even more sick life hacks in the next issue!
